Every Moms Guide to Surviving Summer 2020
Updated: Aug 9, 2020
Let's face it, 2020 has not exactly been the year we were all hoping for, but this doesn't mean you can't find ways to enjoy the remaining weeks of summer with or without the kids, (all health protocols observed of course). Here are some tips for keeping you and your family busy and entertained while socially distancing these last weeks of summer.
1. Plan a Backyard BBQ
If you are too scared to venture outdoors (and rightly so), backyard barbecues never grow old. If you haven't invested in an outdoor grill as yet there are lots of options on www.walmart.com with grills starting at as little as $40.00.
2. DIY Backyard Water Park
Create the ultimate water playground for your kids. Choose a mix of blow-up pools and water games that the entire family can enjoy. Check out the mini water park I created for my girls and my nephew about two summers ago. This summer I added a sprinkler and mini pool to the collection and the kids absolutely love it! 3. Bring Back Family Games Night
Pre-COVID, we were all so busy being busy that family game nights and other great family-centric activities had gotten placed on the back burner. Now is the perfect time to dust those cobwebs off those board games and start playing together as a family again. Family games like Jenga, UNO, monopoly and scrabble may just be some of the games you already have hidden at home. If not, now's the time to start the collection. You can purchase these games and more on amazon. Click on the pic below and explore.
4. Get Going on the DIY Home Project You've Been Putting Off
Have you been putting off some much needed projects around your home? There is no better time than now to get to it! Whether it's a paint job or redesigning the kids room a fun and creative project around the house is sure to keep you busy this summer. Need some inspiration? 5. Plan A Beach Day
In most places beaches are now open to the public and let's be honest, there is no summer without some sun, sea and sand. If you are willing to venture out be sure to stay away from crowds and to always wear your mask. Enjoy!
6. Dine Out
This may not be an option for everyone, but if there are restaurants now offering dining options then why not go for it? Just be sure to visit their website or call in advance to find out what their health protocols are and to ensure that you and your family will feel safe while dining out. If you think it's too soon for dining in, then explore al fresco dining which is essentially outdoor dining.
7. Plan a Camping Weekend (In Your Backyard)
Backyard camping this summer provides a fun alternative to being stuck in the house. Pitch a tent in the backyard and make it a "pretend" weekend out in the wild. Make it a project by having the kids actually help put the tent up and pack snacks and meals. Light a campfire and grill some s'mores. Check out these awesome sleeping bags I found for kids on amazon. Click on the pic to check it out.
8. Bake at Home with the Kids
Kids love cake and cookies, so let them get involved in the process. Buy some fun shaped baking pans and get some sprinkles to add to the fun.
9. Try Fun Arts and Craft Activities
Keep the kids busy at home with some tried and true fun craft activities such as these from some of these exciting activities I found on amazon.
10. Netflix and Popcorn Night
Schedule a night to just sit and indulge in a good movie on Netflix. Whether you choose to do this as a date night at home or just a movie night with the kids, it's a great relaxing activity for everyone. Get that popcorn poppin'!
11. Plan a Spa Day
With everything that's been going on, it's easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed with it all. Spending some time with yourself is crucial to your mental health and overall life balance. Whether you send the kids to grandmas and simply plan a facial and a soak bath for yourself or just schedule an appointment with your favorite masseuse there is no better time than now to treat yourself to some much needed R&R. 12. Painting, Wine & Music with Bae
This romantic activity can not only bring you and your bae closer, but painting has been known to be a great activity for relaxation. See the Harvard Medical Review article on The Healing Power of Art. Create a playlist of soothing music. Play some RnB and buy your favorite bottle of wine and get some paint and mini easels on amazon and enjoy the moment and each other.
13. Start Your Own Backyard Garden
Since the onslaught of covid, there has been much talk about food rationing and self-sufficiency. Backyard gardening has been encouraged by many governments and health pundits as a great source of providing natural organic foods for your family. Though this may not be possible for those living in colder climates all year-round, for those of you who live in warmer temperatures I am here to tell you that the options are unlimited. If you have no idea where to begin here's a great resource/guide for you. Now get to growing!
14. Learn Another Language
If you have more time than usual on your hands these days, why not try learning another language?. My favorite language-learning platform is Duolingo which can be found on both the apple store and playstore. Download the app today and start learning.
15. Family Reading Time
A great family activity that can yield positive results for everyone is reading. According to an article by Emilie Bushwald on www.mommycon.com family reading time opens up your child's imagination, language skills and creates lasting memories. It also helps with concentration and holding longer attentions spands. Try to schedule at least 30 minutes a week into your schedule to read to and with your kids. Don't forget to get daddy involved too! More book recommendation on my amazon store!
